PRESIDENTAL TALK IN CONJUNCTION WITH IFLA WLIC 2018
Kuala Lumpur 24 Jan. - Ms.Gloria Perez-Salmeron, President of the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) visited Malaysia ti view the progress of preparations for the 84th IFLA, World Library and Information Congress (WLIC) which will be held at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Center from 24th - 30 August 2018 more than 4,000 librarians from all over the world are expected to attend this prestigious and exciting event.
Gloria said it is a huge challenge being in the library field as the information services continuously by the advert of modern technologies as well as digital era. Meanwhile Dato' Nafisah Ahmad, National Library of Malaysia Director General said the role of librarians in Malaysia is still relevant and continuous to develop rapidly despite the challenges of digital information and social media.
"PNM is in the process of expanding the development of the U-Pustaka (Ubiquitous Library) as a national information hub to create knowledge bared through the use of digital library services in the society." she said in her opening speech at the Presidential Talk 'Libraries : Motors of change' held at University of Malaya today.
IFLA is the global voice of the library, information profession and the leading international body representing the interest of library and information services. Malaysia is the third country among the ASEAN member states to host IFLA WLIC after Thailand in 1999 and Singapore in 2013. The theme of the congress in Malaysia is "Transform Libraries, Transform Societies" and among others issues, will look at the role of library services and resources in contributing to the national development plans and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
IFLA WLIC 2018 is jointly organized by IFLA, Librarians Associations of Malaysia and National Library of Malaysia and supported by the Ministry of Tourism and Culture Malaysia and Malaysia Convention and Exhibition Bureau (MyCEB).
